Verizon Wireless and HopeLine Donate 1 Million Minutes of Service and $17,000 in Cash Grants to Help Survivors of Domestic Violence in Kentucky

Louisville, kY – Last year, Kentuckians donated more than 3,200 no-longer-used wireless phones to Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® program, helping to support and put resources into the hands of those affected by domestic violence in Kentucky.

HopeLine from Verizon puts the nation’s most reliable wireless network to work in the community by collecting no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition, from any wireless service provider.  Verizon Wireless and the HopeLine program provide wireless phones and airtime to victims of domestic violence and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention, awareness and advocacy.   Phones that cannot be refurbished are recycled in an environmentally sound way under a zero-landfill policy.

“We are grateful to those Kentuckians who donated their no-longer-used phones to HopeLine in 2010,” said John Granby, president–Kentucky/Indiana/Michigan Region for Verizon Wireless. “Your actions are making a difference in the community and helping to support the families of Kentucky affected by domestic violence.  Thank you.”

Support for Kentucky

The generosity of consumers and businesses who donated in Kentucky enabled Verizon Wireless to award $17,000 in cash grants to local domestic violence agencies.  These agencies included Bethany House Abuse Shelter, Inc. in Somerset, The Center for Women and Families in Louisville and Chrysalis House, Inc. in Lexington.

Verizon Wireless’ National Commitment

Throughout 2010, HopeLine collected more than 1.1 million phones and awarded more than $2.1 million in grants to nearly 450 domestic violence prevention and awareness programs.   Moreover, through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless provided 25,392 phones with a total of 75 million free minutes of service to shelters and agencies nationwide for use by clients, including more than 1 million minutes to organizations in Kentucky.

Since 2001, HopeLine has collected more than 8 million phones; awarded more than $10 million in cash grants to prevention and awareness programs nationwide; and donated more than 106,000 HopeLine phones with 319 million minutes of airtime to victims, survivors and domestic violence organizations.

Horton Hears a Who Comes to the iPhone

Horton Hears a Who iconThe fine folks over at Oceanhouse Media have just announced their two latest releases: The Berenstain Bears Love Their Neighbors and one of my favorite books, and movies to be honest, Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who!

Horton the Elephant hears a small speck of dust talking to him. It turns out the speck of dust is actually a tiny planet, home to a city called Who-ville, inhabited by tiny inhabitants known as Whos. Their Mayor asks Horton to protect them from harm, which Horton happily agrees to do, proclaiming throughout the book that “even though you can’t see or hear them at all, a person’s a person, no matter how small.

Oceanhouse Media  has set the standard for interactive books on mobile devices with their line of omBook apps.  Just like with all their other offerings, these newest editions to Oceanhouse’s library will educate and entertain young children and inspire and delight their parents.

Both The Berenstain Bears Love Their Neighbors and Dr. Seauss’s Horton Hears a Who are now available in the App Store.

Verizon Has Most Successful “First Day” in Company History

Yesterday, Verizon opened up sales of the iPhone to its current costumers online, and within a day, the preorders had sold out.  Well no surprise, Verizon has come out and said that yesterday was their most successful day in “first day” sales in company history.  Below is the press release from Verizon.

VERIZON WIRELESS HAS RECORD SALES ON FIRST DAY OF iPHONE 4 ‪

Available to General Public on Feb.10

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. – At 8:10 p.m. EST yesterday, Verizon Wireless ceased online orders of iPhone 4 to existing customers and ended the most successful first day sales in the history of the company.

“This was an exciting day,” said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless. “In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer – designed to reward them for their loyalty.

“I am proud of our employees who worked tirelessly to strengthen and scale our systems, enabling unprecedented customer orders through our website. Overall, it was a very good day,” he added.

‪Mead also said customers will have another opportunity at being among the nation’s first to own an iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network.

“Yesterday’s launch set the pace for next week when we open up sales to everyone across America.”

The general market launch of the iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network will occur on Feb. 10. The company will open its more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores at 7 a.m. It will also be available at all Apple store locations, Best Buy, select Wal-Mart stores, and online at www.verizonwireless.com and www.apple.com.

This spells good fortune for Verizon without question.  I’m extremely curious to see what the numbers are next week, and I’m sure Verizon is chomping at the bit to find out too.

Verizon Invests Nearly $38mil in 2010 to Enhance Kentucky’s Network

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Verizon Wireless announced today it invested nearly $38 million in 2010 to enhance its network in Kentucky. The enhancements included building 14 new cell sites and upgrading equipment on more than 200 existing cell sites to increase coverage and capacity of the company’s voice and 3G high-speed wireless network.

“While our company is focused on building out our 4G network nationwide over the next few years, we remain committed to improving our 3G network that millions of customers rely on every day—here in Kentucky and across the United States,” said John Granby, president–Kentucky/Indiana/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. “Customers may use their wireless devices in different ways, but they all have one need in common—a reliable network. Regardless of how Kentuckians rely on their wireless devices, whether it’s ensuring they can keep in touch with loved ones during an ice storm or they can share their experience at the Kentucky Derby via their favorite social networking site, we will stay ahead of our customers’ increasing demands for fast and secure wireless data services.”

Since the company was formed in 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested nearly $345 million on improvements to its network in Kentucky, including the following upgrades made in 2010:

  • Fourteen new cell sites were activated statewide to improve network coverage and capacity, enabling more customers to use their phones for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps and music, exchanging email and text, picture and video messages, watching high-quality videos and making calls.
  • Performance-based equipment was installed at more than 200 cell sites across Kentucky; thereby boosting capacity of the company’s advanced 3G high-speed wireless network as well as improving its speed and performance.
  • Permanent backup generators were installed at 16 Kentucky cell sites to ensure network functionality during times of crisis.
  • Temporary cell sites were deployed at various high-profile events to beef up network capacity, so that more customers can concurrently use their wireless devices. The temporary cell sites are fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell sites that enhance wireless capacity in a given area and work especially well at events with large crowds, including Thunder Over Louisville, Kentucky Derby, Breeders Cup  (all in Louisville), Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (in Lexington) and IndyCar Race at Kentucky Speedway (in Sparta).
